A minimum of thirteen individuals perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
