Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand
Powerful winds reaching velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 homes without power and led agencies to halt more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by local media.
These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and southern sections of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.
Officials in New Zealand have issued rare red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones such as Wellington and Canterbury.
Residents have been encouraged to remain inside, avoid travel, and get ready for additional electricity and network failures.
Broad Damage and Crisis Response
The electricity loss appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the southern region, although authorities report that energy was being slowly brought back.
Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, while power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.
Within the capital, a individual was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.
Additionally in the city, a individual was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.
Air travel entering and leaving the city have been suspended due to the gusts, and certain highways and community centers are shut down.
At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate emergency management operations.
Strike Action Amid Severe Weather
These intense gusts on Thursday coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been called a "major walkout", demanding better pay and working conditions.
However the extreme weather has forced them to alter various scheduled activities, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or abandoned.
Comparable winds are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.
Authorities have announced burning restrictions for concern about bushfires.
