Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been won on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial title for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid year, winning just one match at the major tournaments and undergoing a difficult moment at the US Open.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - led to him falling of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-term coach Cervara.
Now training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set victory over opponent Corentin Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's maiden championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface since that period of the previous year.
Victory also indicates he has won twenty-one titles at 21 distinct tournaments.
"It's the first time I have attended a event with my children simultaneously, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," commented ranked player the champion.
"This championship is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I got when my older daughter her name was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six finals, featuring in that event in the past months.
His defensive play style and recurring emotional displays on court had led some to wonder if his skill to perform at the top level was over.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to advance forward and play assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.
Medvedev came back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, winning four of the final five games to take the lead.
Both players swapped break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, bidding for his first tour title, took control to create a third set.
Moutet saved 4 initial opportunities in a competitive third set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Suitably, the winner secured the title with a shot at the net area, with Moutet incapable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
