The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Developer to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

His management and experience in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having devoted the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep observing the evolution of the game in the weeks to follow.

David
