Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.

A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
